The First Nations Forestry Program (FNFP) is a joint initiative between Natural Resources Canada and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. The FNFP held the National Conference on Aboriginal Forestry – Creating a New Climate for Aboriginal Forestry May 11-13, 2004 to provide three days of information sharing, partnership building and collaborative work. Delegates engaged in spirited dialogue on relevant and current issues and opportunities important to Aboriginal forestry. The Conference brought together over 300 participants including Aboriginal leaders, government decision–makers, Aboriginal and non–Aboriginal forest industry professionals, academics and students for dynamic and informative presentations, workshops and local field trips. There was also be a demonstration of traditional crafts from the forest, and on the use of GIS technology in forest planning and mapping. This regional workshop will brought together representatives from forest-based communities in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and northwestern Ontario, as well as Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal experts in the fields of indicator development and certification.
